The 2011 Princess Margaret Showhome is simply gorgeous.
Lynda Reeves and the House & Home design team put together a romantic design inspired by wine country. (Imagine a Spanish-style casa in California's Napa Valley, an estancia in the wine region of Argentina, a stone and stucco house in a vineyard in Tuscany.) The team worked closely with architect Keith MacDonald, builder PCM and landscape designer Ronald Holbrook. Rustic influences seen throughout perfectly mix with modern comforts, resulting in a 6,500-square-foot dream home.
Spanish-Style Living Room
Two huge Moorish-style mirrors lend a Spanish flavour to this great room. The Geoffrey sofa by Montauk was custom-slipcovered in ivory linen. It serves as a light backdrop for custom throw pillows in solid linen edged in a contrasting blanket stitch and a Navajo-inspired Ralph Lauren woven cloth. The Serengeti armchair from Elte and two Safari Camp chairs are a natural mix with the handcrafted cherry coffee table and tree-stump side tables.
Beautiful Fireplace Design
The view from the library showcases the warm, neutral great room. The limestone mantel and hearth stone were custom-made by Tartaruga Design. On the mantel, artwork by Daniel Schneider is flanked by handwrought iron candlesticks from Hollace Cluny.
Organic Coffee Table
The table's finish contrasts with the chevron floors.
Michel Zelnik made the organic coffee table for the 2011 Princess Margaret Showhome's great room out of a thick slab of cherrywood. Many coats of tung oil were applied to give it a stunning satin finish, emphasizing the natural wood grains.
Sophisticated Writing Desk
Intricate scroll lamps add rich detail to a living room.
A classic writing area rests against one wall in the great room. Fresh flowers and a silk ficus tree inject colour into the corner.
Clean & Contemporary Library
A table and custom glass-fronted cabinets with antique cremone bolt hardware give this room sparkle.
Grand Symmetrical Dining Room
Deep blue curtains flank French doors.
The dining table was chosen for its oval ends and the extra leaf. Burlap pendants hung low create a relaxed intimacy.
Classic Dining Room Hutch
A rustic wood finish gives this hutch an heirloom look.In the dining room, the painted interior of the hutch plays off the blues in the Faience dishes on the opposite wall, and the indigo and cream linen drapes.
Blue-And-White Dish Display
The symmetrical plate placement is balanced by two chairs that flank the dresser.
The inspiration for the grand dining room was John Derian’s romantic Faience dishes. A paper pattern of each one was made and taped to the wall before hanging the plates.
Mustard Kitchen Cabinetry
Two levels of cupboard doors add to the detail in this kitchen.
After years of open shelves, it was time to return to solid-fronted upper cabinets for this dream country kitchen. These are House & Home's own design, made by Heritage Kitchens.
Modern Farmhouse Sink
A country-style pendant light hangs above.
The addition of stainless steel — in the Franke farmer’s sink — keeps the kitchen feeling current. The terracotta tile backsplash is glazed a soft cream and runs right to the ceiling.
Country Kitchen Hutch
A dark finish and worn edges give this piece substance.
There are a few wonderful antiques in the showhome, including this Ontario pine hutch circa 1900. Trish Johnston found the glazed Kalamkari-print plates at Pottery Barn.
French-Style Stove
A black finish contrasts beautifully with mustard cabinetry.
Honed CaesarStone counters in off-black complement the matte black CornuFé stove that is the centrepiece of the kitchen. The range hood was custom-made in the classic French shape.
Kitchen Servery Cabinet
Glassware is neatly arranged for a clean display.
Custom-built doors lead down the hall to a servery that sits between the kitchen and the mudroom. An apothecary cabinet from Restoration Hardware fits perfectly in the space.
Spacious Country Mudroom
Lockers perfectly accommodate coats, hats and accessories.
The mudroom and servery at the back door are visually joined by yellow toile-papered walls.
Elegant Powder Room
A uniquely shaped mirror adds visual interest.
In the main floor powder room, brass knobs on the distressed vanity coordinate with the faucet. The grey marble top contrasts with the ornate dark wood finish.
Grand Front Hall
An airy, spacious foyer keeps the look modern. The double-height front hall shows off the chevron wood floors and a custom staircase. A unique chandelier adds drama.
Cosy Principal Bedroom
Layers of pale yellow and white adorn the bed.
A mid-19th-century French style bed pairs well with a more contemporary pedestal side table.
Pretty Twin Bedroom
Light curtains accent the four poster beds. This twin bedroom features bedding House & Home designed with fabrics courtesy of Kravet and Primavera. The lampshades were a lucky find at Pottery Barn.
Neutral Desk Vignette
Romantic and feminine pieces create an inspiring writing area.Artwork from In2Art was cleverly affixed to a burlap-covered tackboard on the writing desk in the guest suite.
Wallpapered Bathroom Ensuite
Black shutters define the window frame. The principal suite boasts a romantic bathroom, featuring a double-glass shower clad in white Thassos marble and the Cabana freestanding oval tub from Ginger’s. The walls are papered in Thibaut’s toile de Jouy.
Lower Level Media Room
A painted brick fireplace adds warmth and cosiness. The media room demonstrates a creative way to use a challenging space. The media room–wine cellar combo creates an invitation to relax and unwind. Furnished with graphic Ikea furniture and accents, the area is also fully wired with Radiant Audio Design components and an LG Electronics 52" Blu-ray TV.
Red-And-White Guest Bedroom
Wallpaper creates a focal point in this room. The lower-level guest suite offers a private haven, perfect for a young adult. Like most of the furniture and fittings on this floor, the bed, chest and chair are courtesy of Ikea. A bold modern Pierre Frey damask-print wallpaper inspired the room’s raspberry accents.
Contemporary Wine-Tasting Cellar
A luxurious lounge perfect for entertaining. The new restaurant-inspired Cavavin Majestika wine fridges were a gift from The Wine Establishment and turn the downstairs lounge into a wine-tasting cellar.
Organized Craft Room
Keep your supplies in order with stylish storage. On the lower level is a treasure: a room for laundry, ironing, sewing, wrapping and craft projects. The huge work table is topped in polished concrete and has six drawers and ample storage below.
Practical Laundry Room Design
Open shelves keep a lower level laundry room airy, while wicker baskets keep necessities out-of-sight.
Sleek & Organized Garage
Slat walls offer customizable storage.
Stylish stainless steel cabinets and slat walls from OnWall Solutions are easy-to-clean, and well-suited for an indoor/outdoor space. Stocked with Ryobi tools, the garage is equipped for any DIY project.
