A new son has risen over Britain.
Prince William and Kate Middleton, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, welcomed a healthy baby boy Monday at 4:24 p.m. London time, Buckingham Palace announced.
The baby, weighing in at a robust 8 pounds and 6 ounces, is third in line to the British throne, behind his grandfather, Prince Charles, and his joyful dad.

“We could not be happier,” the 31-year-old William said in a statement.
For now, the name of the regal newcomer remains a mystery.
But his arrival was greeted noisily in London. “May he be long-lived, happy and glorious and one day reign over us. God save the queen!” said town crier Tony Appleton as he shouted the news on the steps of St. Mary’s Hospital in west London, where Middleton, 31, had given birth.

Early indications were that the pregnancy — relentlessly scrutinized since it was first announced in December — concluded smoothly.
The infant’s formal title is His Royal Highness the Prince of Cambridge. As for his name, it will be revealed “in due course,” the family statement said.

That might be a while — William’s name was not announced for a week.
The baby is likely to grow up to be the 43rd monarch of England in a line going back to 1066.

Marcus Setchell, the royal gynecologist who led the team that delivered the newborn, gave the celebrity infant a rave review. The new prince is a “wonderful baby, beautiful baby,” Setchell told the crowd outside the hospital.
William planned to stay overnight with his wife and baby in the hospital — a first for a royal dad. He will also take two weeks’ paternity leave.
The news was announced by a press release, which ricocheted around the globe, followed by a traditional bulletin posted on an easel at the gates to Buckingham Palace.

The new royal grandfather was in unusually high spirits.
“Both my wife and I are overjoyed at the arrival of my first grandchild. It is an incredibly special moment for William and Catherine, and we are so thrilled for them on the birth of their baby boy,” Prince Charles and Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, said in a statement.
“Grandparenthood is a unique moment in anyone’s life.”

Britain's Queen Elizabeth returns in a car to Buckingham Palace in London on Monday.

Appropriately, the first to hear the news was Queen Elizabeth, the baby’s great-grandmother, who got a call from William, who used an encrypted phone.
A tremendous cheer went up among the crowd gathered around St. Mary’s once the news got out.
“I think we still love the Queen, we still love the monarchy,” said Victor Stoll of Kansas City, Mo., who was among the hundreds cheering the newborn.

The Duchess of Cambridge went into labor early Monday morning.

Some began to sing, “Happy birthday, dear prince.”
Royal watchers had swarmed the hospital starting around 6 a.m., when a pair of lucky photographers spotted Middleton’s car pulling up at the hospital where Princess Diana gave birth to William in 1982.
She arrived in a furious thunderstorm, and gave birth on the hottest day in London since 2006 — a scorching 91 degrees.
